I am a self-confessed theatre nerd and absolutely love musicals. I took GCSE and A-Level Drama and grew up desperate to be on the stage. However, I know that I'm not the best singer, so I have to channel my love for musical theatre into just watching shows rather than performing in them! I'm very lucky that B (my boyfriend) also loves musicals, so we have seen a fair few together (pre-COVID, obviously).
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see all of the shows on my bucket list - either because they're not currently running, they're in other countries or because I just haven't managed to book tickets yet! Maybe a future blog post could be coming back to this one and editing/adding to it... but for now, here are the 10 shows on my current bucket list:
1. Matilda
I am desperate to see this one! I’ve always loved the film and I’ve heard that the show is supposed to be amazing. I've listened to the songs a few times (and actually taught my old class the song 'Revolting Children' - which they definitely weren't!)
2. Legally Blonde The Musical
Oh My God, Oh My God You Guys! LOVE the film, LOVE the soundtrack… just wish it would come to the UK!
3. In The Heights
We saw this film the night before we moved house and we became OBSESSED! We love Lin Manuel Miranda and we loved Hamilton, so we knew it was going to be good. The soundtrack, the storyline, Anthony Ramos… everything was just perfect. I’d like to see the stage musical to compare!
4. The Lion King
Another one I’ve wanted to see forever! The Lion King is my favourite Disney film, so it’s only right that I go and watch the musical, right? We actually had tickets to see this in October 2020, but it’s been rescheduled to next year due to Covid. Sob.
5. Mean Girls
Mean Girls is such a cult favourite! I just really hope it comes to the UK soon so we can go and watch it. I’ve downloaded the soundtrack even though I haven’t seen it!
6. Beetlejuice
I actually only saw the film during lockdown last year, but I’ve heard the musical is supposed to be incredible! Another one where I’ve downloaded the soundtrack without actually seeing the musical.
7. Sweeney Todd
Again, love the film, just have never seen the stage version! I can imagine this would be amazing live.
8. Les Misérables
I feel like this is a classic one to watch, but I’ve still never seen it! I’ve only seen the film *hides face in hands*.
9. Everybody's Talking About Jamie
This is a new musical, but again, I’ve only heard good things about it! I wish I’d been to see it when Bianca Del Rio and Michelle Visage were in it… any other Drag Race fans here?
10. Bat Out Of Hell
I’m not the biggest Meatloaf fan (I probably only know about 3 songs!) but B has been to see it and told me I would definitely enjoy it!
I always book my theatre tickets from Theatre Tickets Direct because they usually have great offers and deals on. I also like how they tell you when shows are going to be closing so that you can see them before their run ends!
Let me know what’s on your musical theatre bucket list! Have you seen any of the ones on my list? Are there any others that you would recommend?
I want to see several of these as well! I just saw DEH and it was amazing.

I’ve seen The Lion King twice and I’d go again. It’s SO good and worth every penny! I hope you get to go.
I’d love to see Matilda! I was ready to book to see The Prince of Egypt before Covid happened. Hope they bring it back.

I haven't seen a good musical in years! These sound amazing, I wish we had such good options where I live. Thank you for sharing!
I love going to see musicals! I can't believe they made Beetlejuice into a musical! I would love to go see it! Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE musicals and sadly my partner does not! But my mum does and some of my friends so it’s all good. I am actually going to see Heathers the Musical for the second time tonight (I just love it). I have also seen the Adam’s Family musical (it was amazing and recommend), Dirty Dancing, The Lion King, The Wedding Singer (These are all top musicals). I agree about Beetlejuice and I was in New York with my partner when it was on and I regret not forcing him to see it 😂 great list! X
